Highlights of Humanity: How to Build Community
written by JERMAINE FOWLER I HIGHLIGHTS OF HUMANITY I May 04, 2023
Here are a few ideas, quotes, and a question to consider this week.
I.
The Main Idea
Building community is at the heart of the human experience, and I've been reflecting on our mission here at the Humanity Archive to create a life-long learning community that connects people from all walks of life, one soul at a time. With a world that can feel isolating, it's essential to remember that we simply cannot do it alone. A strong community fosters growth, learning, and support for every individual. Through historical practices such as mutual aid, neighbors would help neighbors, sharing resources, and supporting each other in times of need. It's in that same spirit that we're building our learning community.

The Concept of Ubuntu
Ubuntu, a philosophy and term originating from the Bantu languages of southern Africa, embodies the interconnectedness of humanity. The term translates to "I am because we are." Ubuntu holds that our well-being is intrinsically linked to the well-being of others, emphasizing empathy, compassion, and a sense of shared responsibility. By practicing Ubuntu, we recognize the spiritual depth and weight of our interconnectedness and strive to treat others with kindness, understanding, and respect.

Two Quotes
This week, let's reflect on the power of community and the concept of Ubuntu, drawing inspiration from the words of French philosopher Simone Weil and Indian yogi Swami Vivekananda:
Simone Weil, a philosopher and political activist, deeply believed in the importance of empathy and compassion:
"Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." - Simone Weil
Swami Vivekananda, a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies to the Western world, emphasized the unity of all beings:
"Where can we go to find God if we cannot see Him in our own hearts and in every living being?" - Swami Vivekananda
Both quotes remind us of the importance of understanding and unity in building strong communities. Genuine attention and generosity, as Weil suggests, can create a foundation of empathy, while Vivekananda emphasizes the interconnectedness of all beings as a pathway to finding unity.

What I'm Learning
As we continue to grow the Humanity Archive community, I've come to understand the many benefits of a strong community over isolation. Connecting with like-minded individuals allows us to share knowledge and experiences, offer encouragement and support, and foster a sense of belonging. Communities empower us to be our best selves and remind us that we are not alone in our struggles and triumphs.

A Personal Story
In my early 20s, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, where I discovered a sense of community in a unique way. Working alongside those in need and other volunteers, I found connection and purpose in our collective efforts to improve lives. The experience deepened my understanding of the importance of coming together to create lasting change and to support one another.

A Question to Ponder
How can you embody the spirit of Ubuntu and contribute to building a stronger community around you?
Weaving the tapestry of our lives, it's vital to remember that "I am because we are." By embracing the interconnectedness and compassion of Ubuntu, we can work towards creating communities where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered.
